Stellar to Build Nestle's New North American Product Technology Center

Stellar, a fully integrated firm focused on design, engineering, construction and mechanical services worldwide, has begun pre-construction of a $53 million product technology center for Nestlé USA. As the design-builder on the project, Stellar will oversee all architecture, engineering and construction for the 148,000-square-foot facility for Nestlé in Solon, Ohio.

“As one of the leading food and beverage design-build firms in the U.S., this project crosses many areas of our expertise including commercial construction, engineering, thermal, mechanical and refrigeration,” said Richard Lovelace, Stellar Divisional Vice President, Commercial. “We’ve enjoyed a long relationship with Nestlé, working together on over 20 different projects.”

Nestlé will develop new prepared foods and enhance existing products at the new facility, scheduled to open in late 2014. The center includes test kitchens, production areas, food science labs, a state-of-the-art sensory lab and office space. Inside the facility, a smaller “pilot plant” will simulate food processing to test production of new products and techniques for making them on a smaller scale.

The center also will house a consumer center and a culinary center. The consumer center will allow live observations of consumer interaction with Nestlé products. The results provide valuable insight used to guide improvement efforts and to confirm those aspects performing well. In the culinary center, internal Nestlé teams will work with their food and beverage supplier-partners, to see first-hand how the ingredients sourced for Nestlé products perform in recipes developed in the kitchen. The above-mentioned centers will feature high-end presentation kitchens equipped with cameras, TVs and other technology.

Unlike a traditional office building with fixed walls and dropped ceilings, the building’s design concept is based on openness and flexibility. “Nestlé’s goal was to create a facility that promotes collaboration and creativity,” Lovelace said. “Large glass curtain walls with metal panels surround the exterior, while the interior features exposed structural elements and mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems.”

The building includes many sustainability features and is being designed to LEED standards. “The facility will feature LED lighting, low-VOC products and recyclable materials,” Lovelace said. “A particular environmental highlight is the use of all-natural refrigerants in both the mechanical and refrigeration systems.”
