Stellar, a fully integrated firm focused on design, engineering, construction and mechanical services worldwide, has received the Historic Hawai‘i Foundation Preservation Honor Award (http://historichawaii.org) for its work on the Schofield Barracks Stoneman/Gimlet Field Rehabilitation project.
Stellar began construction in July 2012 on a multi-purpose sports complex at Schofield Barracks, a U.S. Army post on the island of O‘ahu, Hawai‘i. Stellar provided full design-build services for the renovation of the 10-acre complex, which includes a concessions building, football/soccer field, rubber track, three baseball fields, fitness trails and eight fitness stations. The complex reopened in June 2013.
Stellar worked alongside its project partners to comply with the State Historic Preservation Office requirements. The project goals were: 1) to maintain it as a park, 2) to maintain or increase the green areas, 3) to reduce the vertical height of structures to enhance the visual connection throughout the park, 4) to maintain as much of the existing vegetation as possible, and 5) to add as much vegetation as possible.
The project design included reducing the number of light poles, lowering grandstands and announcer booths, and minimizing paved parking areas to retain and add trees. Landscape buffers were created between the playing fields and the parking areas to increase green space. Special consideration was given to an adjacent historic neighborhood, which included re-routing traffic to a side road to minimize congestion and building on-site water retention to reduce run-off. Green fencing, green furniture and green fitness paths were installed to minimize “visual noise.”
“We were very pleased with the outcome of this facility, especially in terms of the number of objectives we achieved related to the historic preservation requirements,” said Richard M. Lovelace, Stellar Senior Vice President. “This base now has a new, improved sports complex that offers both function and aesthetics.”
