Stellar Completes Renovation of ‘Top Gun’ Officers’ Club at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar
SAN DIEGO (September 12, 2019) — Stellar, a firm providing award-winning construction management at-risk, design-build and general contracting services for a range of commercial and public sector markets, has completed its renovations of the Commissioned Officers’ Club at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar.
The $7.7 million dollar project included:
A 1,350-square-foot addition to the building’s entrance, inspired by the wing of an aircraft
A full renovation to the club’s 4,500-square-foot commercial kitchen
A 1,200-square-foot addition to house cold storage and a service corridor
Renovation of existing bar front, bar cooler, and bar prep and storage areas
Stellar also retrofitted the building with new fire alarm and fire protection systems. Seismic upgrades were also made throughout the existing facility to strengthen the foundation and building diaphragm to meet California seismic requirements.
“The Officer’s Club was originally built in the 1950s, so we encountered a lot of unexpected challenges and had to update a lot of the building’s infrastructure,” said Joe Mark, Operations Manager, Public Sector/Military, Stellar. “We utilized 3D laser scanning technology to determine existing conditions and make accurate decisions when designing upgrades for the building.”
The Officer’s Club at MCAS Miramar is home to a meeting center with conference rooms, several full-service bars and a large ballroom that can be reserved for special events. The military installation was also a main filming location for the 1986 movie “Top Gun,” and its Officers’ Club was the intended setting for the iconic scene featuring the song “You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling.”
Construction first began in March 2018 and officially finished last month. This is the second project Stellar has completed at MCAS Miramar. The firm also designed and constructed the Marine Mart near the flight line, which opened in June 2018.
The design and construction of this facility is funded by United States Marine Corps Non-Appropriated Funds (NAF) and Appropriated Funds (APF) provided by Marine Corps Community Services and Headquarters Marine Corps. US Army Installation Management Command (IMCOM) is managing the contract. Stellar has worked with IMCOM on 40 projects.
